Meta develops CRAM to access compressed memory directly in Linux
The approach lets software access compressed RAM using standard memory semantics rather than treating it as a block device. According to Phoronix, CRAM uses hardware-assisted compression while preserving access to individual bytes and cache lines, and Meta engineers are developing it amid memory shortages, high prices and growing capacity needs.
