About Front Scoop
Front Scoop is a front page for technology news. It reads 63 publishers, groups every report about the same event into one story, ranks the stories, and updates every few minutes. Each story shows its headline, a short summary, and a link to every publisher that covered it.
How stories are found
A program reads each publisher's public RSS or Atom feed. Busy feeds are checked about every five
minutes and quiet ones less often, never more often than the feed itself asks, and every request is a
conditional one, so an unchanged feed costs the publisher almost nothing. It follows each site's
robots.txt and backs off when a site asks it to slow down. It identifies itself as
FrontScoopBot/1.0 (+https://frontscoop.com/about/).
Reports are grouped into one story when their headlines and descriptions share the same specific names and enough of the same words within a day and a half of each other. Reports that name different models of one product line (a Galaxy S26 and a Galaxy S27, say) are kept apart. The headline shown is the one from the first newsroom to report the story.
Deal posts, gift guides, streaming listings and other items that are not tech news are left out, even from tech publishers. An item from a general feed only appears alongside reports from other publishers, unless that publisher has full weight.
How ranking works
Each story's score adds up, for every publisher that covered it:
- the publisher's weight (1.0 for newsrooms that break tech news, down to 0.3; see Sources),
- halved for every six hours since that publisher's first report,
plus a little for discussion on Hacker News and for several publishers picking a story up within the same hour. A story marked Developing has had three or more new publishers in the last hour. The top slots on the front page go only to stories covered by more than one publisher.
Categories
Every story is filed under one of AI, Chips, Software, Security, Devices, using the names and terms in its reports, the publisher's own section, and a vote across every report in the story. Top shows all of them. Stories about policy or business appear under whichever area they concern.
Summaries
A summary marked "Summary from" a publisher is the opening of that publisher's own description from its feed, cut to two or three sentences. A summary marked "Summary by Front Scoop" was written by an AI model from the headlines and descriptions of several publishers. It has to follow fixed rules: plain words, only facts the reports contain, the name of the publisher when only one reports a claim, and no quote longer than ten words. Summaries that break a rule are rejected automatically. For the full story, read the publishers' reports.
What Front Scoop shows from publishers
Headlines, a short summary, the publisher's name and a link. It never copies a full article and never shows publishers' images. Source logos on this site are the publisher's initials on a colour, not their trademarks.
